Venturing Leader Training - Second Session

Special thanks to Rob Morrison for spearheading and teaching the Venturing Leader Training sessions in March and April.

More than 60 Venturing leaders became fully trained. So many attended the February meeting that the District wondered what happened (I explained that we'd told you if you came in February, we'd mark you present for the rest of the year's forums. Like I was serious.)

Thank you for attending and making yourselves the best trained leaders for your kids.

Below is the link to Rob's PowerPoint presentation with all the new training information:

Venturing Leader Training Homework

Thank you to those that attended roundtable training tonight. You're 1/2 way to being a fully-trained Venturing leader. Thanks to Rob for preparing and presenting the training.

Rob gave us all some homework about the Guide to Safe Scouting. Here it is, with hyper links, to make you life easy. Because we're all about that.

Here's the direct link to the Guide to Safe Scouting page, where you can also download the PDF.
Below are the links to the specific pages Rob asked us to study up.
(I'll apologize in advance if the links are off.)

Leadership requirements for trips and outings
Safe Swim Defense, only report item #1 - Qualified supervision
Scuba, first 2 paragraphs
Safety Afloat, first paragraph under the Safey Afloat title
Camping, Venturing paragraph
Medical information, brief description of classes 1, 2, 3
Guns and Firearms (I can't find the exact link, but maybe this)
Cave exploring
Climbing and rappelling, 2 paragraphs under Qualified Supervision
Unauthorized and restricted activities
Transportation, all 11 items under the title Automobiles
Tour permits

Thank you - and we'll see you in March to complete our training.

Venturing Leader-specific Training

February and March Venturing Forums will be for VLST.

You must attend BOTH of the forums to become fully "trained."

Forum will run from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm on BOTH nights - if you miss one, there will not be a make up session.

This is also the ONLY training in our district for Venturing leaders this spring. There will be another Saturday training session in the fall.

There is NO CHARGE for the class this time. Please attend - invite all your co-advisers to become fully trained.

We'll have treats. There will be dancing. And music. And... okay, just the first part.
But you will feel awesome about being trained with the latest information to be the best leader you can for your youth. And you'll get a sweet "trained" patch for your uni.

We hope to see you there.

October Roundtable Summary

Thanks to the Higley Stake for their instruction tonight. Those that missed - missed out. But I'll post some links here so it's not a total loss for you (and hopefully not a loss for the Highland Hawks tonight, where lots of people were... [sorry Tigers.])

David Graham instructed us on how to hold an "Ethical Controversy" night, and we broke into small groups for participation/discussion in some ethical controversies.

If you'd like to learn more, here's a link to the Venturing Manual online - start at page 197: http://www.people.vcu.edu/~albest/Training/VenturingLeaderManual.pdf

We then had a presentation on climbing by Jeff Winder (sorry if I wrote down the wrong first name Bro W.) Here's his Powerpoint presentation: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pzv9zp2pi293ke6/Rock%20Climbing%20and%20repelling.ppt?dl=0
You can learn who to contact to get trained, and where you can even rent equipment.

Climbing Training is on December 3, 4, and 5 - contact Jeff Jeffries at 520-705-2094. Cost is $35. (See the PowerPoint for more details.)

Thanks to those who participated - see you next month.

Upcoming Roundtables

Just a reminder about the upcoming roundtables. We had a change for this and next month on topics. This month we'll hear learn about Ethical Controversies, and next month the topic will be the Leadership training.

Please remember that in December we don't have a regular roundtable. It's time for the District's awards banquet. Today is the last day to submit nominations for awards.

The banquet will be at 777 E Elliot Rd in Gilbert - the LDS Stake Center on the southwest corner of Lindsay and Elliot at 7pm. I'm told it will short and sweet, with treats at the end.

Remember, you don't have to be shy with your nominations for awards - and they don't have to be for only people that are in your unit.

September Roundtable Summary

Thanks to all who attended roundtable on Thursday, and many thanks to the Highland East Stake for presenting information about a couple of excellent activities their crews had during the past couple of years.

Fall Training 2014

Do you want to be a trained leader? Well, you should. And with all the changes to the Venture program, this training will get you up to date with the latest information to give your youth the best trained leader they can have.

Our district training is on September 13th (see below.) But you're always welcome to attend other districts' trainings instead. I've combed the council website, and the best I can come up with (on dates other than September 13th) is below.

Venture Leader Specific Training

San Tan District
Saturday, September 13 – 8:00 am to 12:00 pm
2740 S Lindsay Rd, Gilbert AZ  85296
Cost $10.00

Thunderbird District
Saturday, September 27 – 7:45 am to 1:30 pm
4748 W Orangewood Ave, Phoenix AZ  85301
Cost $15

This last one is listed, but you may want to contact them - it looks like VST, but it's not the usual length of time… would hate for you to go there and blow the drive, and a Friday evening…

Camelback District
Friday, October 24 – 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Heard Scout Pueblo: 1901 E Dobbins Rd, Phoenix AZ  85040
Cost $10

If you find others - please feel free to email me or comment below, and I'll add them to the list.
